Working out is essential for a healthy mind and body. Multi-modality exercise keeps your heart healthy, your body nimble, and your mind functioning. Although there are many benefits that come from working out, it is a must to have an exercise prescription specific to you and for you to follow it.
Without the plan and failing to listen to your body can lead to injury and health issues. If you choose to work out on your own accord, be mindful of workout mistakes that can harm versus help your body in the long run.
Skipping your warm-ups
One of the most important factors of a workout is your warm-up. Establishing a consistent warm-up routine is just as important as creating a consistent workout routine. Warm-ups prepare your cardiorespiratory system while also warming up tissues for better movement, all while helping get your mind prepared and focused.
Each of these elements can prevent injuries and help you maximize your workout and associated results. Without warming up, you put yourself at risk of tearing a muscle or unnecessarily straining your body.
Training beyond your capabilities
A serious consideration when working out is understanding your capabilities. It’s always great to reach your gym goals, but it’s important to ensure you work within your current capacities and skillsets. Overworking your body, especially early on, can cause serious long-term damage and be a hindrance to the necessary continuity of exercising.
Certain injuries that result from working beyond your capabilities could require physiotherapy. While our trained professionals at Rosedale Wellness Centre are more than happy to treat gym-related injuries, we would rather you be healthy by appreciating your limits. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and work your way up in frequency and intensity.
Not having a well-defined exercise regimen
A well-defined exercise regimen can keep you safe and reduce the chances of things like lower back pain. Having a professional design a regimen based on your capabilities, goals, lifestyle, equipment, and experience is ideal.
Choosing a regimen that someone else uses or that you found online will not work for you since everybody trains at different levels and paces. At a minimum, you will want to have an exercise professional review your program and check in with you to be sure your form and intensity are appropriate for you.
Exercising when injured
Your body requires extra rest while injured, so if you continue your normal workout routine, you can make your injury worse. You will still need to work out, but you will need to have the exercise regime modified to avoid exacerbating the injury and allow tissue and systems proper recovery.
Not getting adequate rest between workouts
A great way to prevent long-term harm to your body is resting between workouts. Something as simple as taking a full day between workouts to do a gentler mind-body movement session or just walking can help your recovery and aid in preventing lower back pain.
Eating properly and allowing your body to rest up can save your muscles from getting overworked, which could prevent injury and help you get the most out of your workouts.
Poor posture
Taking care of your body while you’re not working out is also important for preventing injury and pain. Poor posture can lead to long-term tissue changes that can lead to chronic pain. Keeping your posture in mind while you’re working out, while at work, and while you’re just relaxing around the house can go a long way. You can prevent the need for treatment like physiotherapy by maintaining a correct and safe posture.
