Physiotherapists at Rosedale Physiotherapy help people understand why they’re experiencing pain, and how it can be managed. They can help prevent a condition or injury from developing, and help prevent re-injury or pain from developing into a chronic condition.
People seek out the support from physiotherapists at places like Rosedale physio for all sorts of problems. Many seek the help for sport-related injuries, or workplace accidents, or even for pain associated with daily living. One concern that is very prevalent among the population is concussions. Concussions can be caused by many different circumstances from sport injuries to accidents within the home.
To be clear, a concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by a force imparted to your brain. This force can be direct, such as from a hit to your head, or indirect, from an impact somewhere else on your body that transmits force to the brain. Concussions affect how the brain functions, but don’t show up on standard imaging tests like X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans. Concussions can cause a variety of somatic, cognitive, and/or emotional symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, feeling foggy, or emotional lability. They can also affect balance, cognitive function, behaviour, or sleep (physiocanhelp.ca).
Concussions affect different people in different ways, so Rosedale physiotherapy will start by assessing your condition. Often, the injury that causes a concussion may also cause a neck injury. Your physio will assess your neck, as well as your neurological status, balance, and overall function. Physiotherapy Rosedale may try a variety of techniques to get their patients to a pain-free status, such as educating the patient to using manual therapy to provide some relief. Physiotherapists may also provide and teach stretching and strengthening exercises, as well as balance exercises. Eventually, Rosedale physio may also use gradual exertion training in an attempt to work towards a progressive return to activity and sport (physiocanhelp.ca).
Concussions are complex injuries and are treated best by a team of different health care professionals, especially if your symptoms are slow to recover. Your physio will work closely with the rest of your health care team to optimize your recovery, so that you can get back to doing what you love.
